108 Buddha

Each of the 108 Buddhas on the background of this thangka features exquisite artistry. The artist from the Himalayas created this masterpiece.

Siddhartha Gautama, the sole child of a Nepalese ruler, was the birthplace of Buddha Shakyamuni. He gave up the comforts of his royal lineage at the age of 29 to become a religious nomad. He reached full enlightenment at the age of 35 after experiencing great insight into the fundamental nature of reality (Dharma). The Buddha is shown in this image touching the ground in a gesture that evokes the moment of the Buddha’s enlightenment, when he touched the ground to experience his profound realization.
