A Chenrezig thangka is a sacred depiction of Avalokiteshvara, known as Chenrezig in Tibetan Buddhism, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. Chenrezig is revered as the embodiment of infinite compassion and is one of the most venerated figures in Tibetan Buddhism. In a thangka, Chenrezig is typically portrayed with four arms, symbolizing his ability to reach out to help sentient beings in all directions.
The most common form of Chenrezig is depicted seated on a lotus throne, symbolizing purity and enlightenment. His two upper hands hold symbolic objects: a crystal mala (prayer beads) in his right hand, representing his continuous recitation of the mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum” to relieve the suffering of all beings, and a lotus flower in his left hand, symbolizing purity and his enlightened mind.
